Objectives for the Program in Chemistry

The Bachelor of Science degree programs in chemistry are available for students who intend to pursue graduate studies, secondary school teaching, or a professional career in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry. The programs provide a strong background in the modern areas of chemistry including biochemistry with emphasis on hands-on laboratory work. They also provide the opportunity for exceptionally talented students to conduct independent research under the guidance of the faculty. The degree programs will also prepare students for further education in health sciences, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, optometry and other health professions provided they take other pre-requisite courses.

Additional Requirement


Chemistry majors must earn a minimum grade of 2.0 in General Chemistry I.  If a grade below 2.0 is earned, General Chemistry I must be repeated before enrolling in General Chemistry II.  As is the case with biology majors, chemistry majors are also limited to two attempts in General Chemistry I including the grade of W.

Additional Information about the Program of Study


  • Total number of credit hours required for the major - 84 cr. out of a total of 120 cr.
  • Additional 30 cr. of LA&S coursework is required toward the major.
  • Students will have 6 cr. of free electives to choose from.
  • Jr./Sr. Writing requirement is met by all upper division lab courses where formal written laboratory reports are required and Chemistry Seminar.
  • Listening and Speaking requirement is met by the advanced courses in chemistry and the capstone course, Chemistry Seminar.
  • Computer Literacy is satisfied by the application of computers and on-line homework assignments in several courses beginning with General Chemistry.
