EDUC 7640 - Mathematics: Curriculum, Assessment, Planning, and Teaching

3 cr.

This course introduces the teacher candidate to the curriculum, assessment, planning, and teaching associated with comprehensive mathematics instruction in the PreK-6 school setting. It explores the developmental progression of how children learn math, the critical issues in math education, and the mathematical content and pedagogy needed to teach the range of learners in the PreK-6 classroom. Teaching strategies and techniques modeled are consistent with the standards of mathematical practice, state curriculum frameworks, and national standards. A major focus is learning how to help children construct their own understanding of mathematics through procedural proficiency and problem solving. Candidates evaluate strategies that make mathematical knowledge accessible to all students and develop well-structured lessons with measurable outcomes.

This course is required for all early childhood and elementary education initial licensure candidates. A 20 hour pre-practicum experience is required.
