ENGL 4050 - The Novel in the 18th Century 3 cr. 3 hr. Offered every fourth semester.
This course introduces students to some of the rich critical and theoretical traditions surrounding one of the truly great modern literary forms, the novel. Our discussions will move between crucial works of English literatures and influential theoretical texts as we explore the social conditions that led to the emergence of the novel. We will also discuss issues of class, gender, and imperial power in major works of Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Burney, Johnson, Austen, Edgeworth, Heywood, and others. AIA, IHIP, LIT, LI
