HMSV 3550 - Mental and Behavioral Health Policy 3 cr. 3 hr. Offered once per year
This course is an introduction to the history and trajectory of mental and behavioral health policies in the United States. Students learn skills in analysis and application of mental and behavioral health policies and systems of care from a prevention, intervention, culturally-informed framework. This course focuses on the presentation, risk and correlated factors, treatment, advocacy, and family and social factors impacting behaviors and mental health from a broad, strengths-based perspective. Students will examine how current US policy impacts or impedes wellness from a mental and behavioral health perspective, particularly from a social and cultural identity standpoint. Students will also compare policy across the US and other countries. *Field Experience: This course requires the successful completion of a 45 hour supervised experience in a mental or behavioral health program or agency. Students must complete the practicum in order to receive a passing grade for the course.
Prerequisite(s): HMSV 1100 Introduction to Human Services; PSY 1100 Introduction to Psychological Science
