AAST 3800 - History of Jazz

This course surveys jazz music from its beginnings in New Orleans to the present day, exploring its elements as well as its role and influence in American history and its global influence on other musical genres. Emphasis will also be placed on the social, cultural, and historical contexts of the African-American experience from which jazz emerged, as well as its influence on global cultures.
