Students are required to complete 36 credits, including nine required courses (27 credits), an action research project (three credits), and two electives (six credits).

Program Description

The Guided Study Program, Professional Concentration, is designed for individuals who hold initial licensure as teachers of students with moderate disabilities or severe disabilities, and who are seeking professional licensure in the same area and level.

SPED 7017 - Psychology of Reading, Reading Development and Disabilities 3 cr. or
SPED 8017 - Specialized Reading Approaches 3 cr.
SPED 7410 - Advanced Strategies for Teaching School-Age Children with Emotional and Behavioral Problems 3 cr. or
SPED 8174 - Behavior Analysis and Intervention in Applied Settings 3 cr.
SPED XXXX Topics: Advanced Assessment Strategies for Special Educators 3 cr.
SPED 8022 - Augmentative and Alternative Communication 3 cr. or
SPED 8000 - Technology for Students with Moderate-Severe Disabilities 3 cr.

Note: Prior to completion of the program of study, candidates are required to take an SEI/ELL content course that is approved for the Massachusetts DESE SEI endorsement. This course may be taken through either Fitchburg State University or the district in which the candidate may work in.
