Students within the Middle School Education concentration may pursue initial teacher licensure as a middle school mathematics (grades 5-8) teacher by completing a Middle School Education major and a second major in Mathematics. In this concentration students will learn the theory, research, and pedagogy necessary to teach middle school Mathematics through the Middle School Education major and develop mathematics content knowledge through the Mathematics major.
Throughout the program of study, students will complete several field-based experiences in middle school settings, which will be supervised by university supervising practitioners and/or university faculty supervisors. These field-based experiences will provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in middle school instruction that incorporates what studetns are learning in their education pedagogy classes as well as mathematics content that they are learning in their mathematics courses. Students will complete a formal practicum for their Middle School Education major as required for initial teacher licensure. This program meets the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Students in this concentration will fulfill the core requirements of the Middle School Educationmajor for students pursuing Middle School Education Mathematics (5-8) initial teacher licensure as well as the core requirements of the Mathematics major with some restrictions and additions of electives. Note:
At least 15 additional semester hours of advanced mathematics (3000 or 4000 level, nine of which must be at the 4000 level).
Additional Information
Interdisciplinary Studies Major with English (Literature or Professional Writing concentration), History, Social Science, Political Science, Earth Systems Science, or Mathematics minor.
