Objectives for the Program in Music

The program in Music provides students with the opportunity to actively engage in music through instrumental or choral work. Courses are designed to fulfill the arts requirement in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Program and to study the history of music at different times across many cultures. A minor is also available.

Requirements for the Minor in Music

The minor in Music requires 18 semester hours of course work including three core courses (9 credits) and three elective courses (9 credits). A pass/fail piano proficiency evaluation or MUSC 2500 is required. Students must take the following:

CORE COURSE REQUIREMENTS - 9 cr.
MUSC 1000 - Art of Music 3 cr. or
MUSC 1500 - World Music 3 cr.
MUSC 2200 - Basic Music Theory 3 cr. or
MUSC 2240 - Harmony I 3 cr.
(3 total credits of Choral Arts and/or Instrumental Arts)
MUSC 2300 - Choral Arts 1 cr. or
MUSC 2400 - Instrumental Arts 1 cr.
ELECTIVE COURSES - 9 cr.
The remaining nine semester hours may be taken from approved music electives. *(MUSC 2000, 2100, 2120, 2130, 2210, are not approved electives.)
