Students within the Middle School Education concentration may pursue initial teacher licensure as a science (grades 5-8) teacher by completing a Middle School Education major and a second major in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDIE). In this concentration students will learn the theory, research, and pedagogy necessary to teach middle school students through the Middle School Education major and develop Interdisciplinary Studies content knowledge through the IDIE major.
Throughout the program of study, students will complete several field-based experiences in middle school settings, which will be supervised by university supervising practitioners and/or university faculty supervisors. These field-based experiences will provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in middle school instruction that incorporates what students are learning in their educational pedagogy classes as well as what they are learning in their IDIE content courses. Students will complete a formal practicum for their Middle School Education major as required for initial teacher licensure. This program meets the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Students in this concentration will fulfill the requirements of the Middle School Education major for students pursuing Middle School Education General Science (5-8) initial teacher licensure as well as the core requirements for the IDIE major that is specific for education majors. The requirements for this program are as follows:
Courses for Middle School Education General Science Major
In addition to the core courses, students are required to complete one minor and two clusters. The minor for this concentration consists of at least 18 credits in Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Systems Science. The two required clusters for a Biology minor are Earth Systems Science and Physical Science-Chemistry. The two required clusters for a Chemistry minor are Biology and Earth Systems Science-Physical Science. The two required clusters for an Earth Systems Science minor are Biology and Physical Science-Chemistry.
