Objectives for the Program in Sociology

The Sociology major is designed to provide students with refined approaches and methods of research and a broad understanding of the social world.

The curriculum has been developed to provide the theoretical background and research skills essential for work concerned with human behavior. Graduates of the program are prepared for immediate entry into a wide variety of occupations in business, education, industry, social service, and public service settings. In addition, many graduates continue formal study by enrolling in advanced degree programs in sociology and related fields.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand key sociological concepts
  • Students will be able to communicate sociological concepts effectively through the use of writing and/or oral skills
  • Students will be able to think critically about social skills and social theories
  • Students will be able to apply sociology to social life
  • Students will develop appropriate skills for conducting sociological research

Requirements for the Major in Sociology

The major requires 42 semester hours of course work. This total includes 15 semester hours of core Sociology courses, 12 semester hours of coursework from content clusters, 12 semester hours of Sociology electives, and 3 semester hours of Applied Statistics. Majors are encouraged to take advantage of relevant courses from the other majors in the Behavioral Sciences Department. Bachelor of Art students are required to have foreign language proficiency at the intermediate level.
