Coverage of local politics has all but been eliminated as the reach of local journalism has dwindled.  Yet, providing citizens with what is happening in their local communities is more important than ever.  Our goal is for Fitchburg State’s student newspaper, The Point, to fill some of that gap and this minor will train students in both understanding state and local government and how to cover it journalistically.  This minor is suitable for students interested in journalism, political science, and the role of political reporting in democratic societies. Students seeking positions as political reporters at the local, state, and federal level would benefit from courses within this minor. In this minor, students will learn how to report, journalistically, on matters of political importance including but not limited to elections, campaigns, local politics (town hall meetings, etc.) and develop foundational knowledge in the important intersection of a free press and a functioning democracy. Students will work on the campus newspaper as political reporters to develop professional skills and a portfolio.
