THEA 2730 - History of the Theater I


3 cr. 3 hr. Day course offered every Semester. Also offered evenings.

This is the first course in a two-semester survey on the history of theater, from its roots in pre-history through the Greeks, the Middle Ages, the renaissance, and ending with Moliere. This course examines the times of Sophocles, Shakespeare and Moliere, among others, discovering how playwrights were products of their times and how their work contributed to shaping those times. The focus is on western theater, but also included are theater traditions of East Asia, India, Oceania and Africa, such as Balinese Dance Theater, Noh, Bunraku and Chinese Opera. ART, GDAN
