MATH 4450 - Mathematical Modeling 3 cr. 3 hr. Offered as needed.
Mathematical modeling is the process of representing complex real-world phenomena with mathematical expressions. Models are analyzed using mathematical tools and numerical simulations, before interpreting results in the context of the system in question. We will focus on models from the physical, social and/or life sciences. Specific modeling topics include recurrence relations, matrix models, empirical models, and ordinary differential equations. Deterministic as well as probabilistic formulations will be considered. Students will implement models and analyze output using a numeric computing environment such as Matlab.
