Middle School Education English (5-8) Initial Teacher Licensure
Chairpersons
Denise LaFrance - Education
Lisa Gim - English Studies
Students within the Middle School Education concentration may pursue initial teacher licensure as a middle school English (grades 5-8) teacher by completing a Middle School Education major and a second major in English Studies. In this concentration students will learn the theory, research, and pedagogy necessary to teach middle school English through the Middle School Education major and develop English content knowledge through the English Studies Literature major.
Throughout the program of study, students will complete several field-based experiences in middle school settings, which will be supervised by university supervising practitioners and/or university faculty supervisors. These field-based experiences will provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in middle school instruction that incorporates what students are learning in their educational pedagogy classes as well as what they are learning in their English content courses. Students will complete a Senior Capstone for their English Studies major and a formal practicum for their Middle School Education major as required for initial teacher licensure. This program meets the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Students in this concentration will fulfill the requirements of the Middle School Education major for students pursuing Middle School Education English (5-8) initial teacher licensure as well as the core requirements for the English Studies major and the literature concentration with some restrictions and additions of electives. The requirements for this program are as follows:
Courses for Middle School Education English Major
Core courses for all English Studies Concentrations
Courses for Literature Concentration
Additional Information
Interdisciplinary Studies Major with English (Literature or Professional Writing concentration), History, Social Science, Political Science, Earth Systems Science, or Mathematics minor.
