The Mathematics Minor for Early Childhood, Elementary, or Special Education majors provides the mathematical foundation needed to become knowledgeable and skillful educators in the 21st century.

This is a 23-24 credit hour program which includes seven 3 or 4 credit-hour mathematics courses as described below.

Required Courses

MATH 1500 - Informal Number Theory 3 cr.
MATH 1300 - Precalculus 4 cr. (will substitute for MATH 1600 Informal Math Modeling)
MATH 2000 - Informal Geometry 3 cr.
MATH 2300 - Calculus I 4 cr.
MATH 1900 - Discrete Mathematics 3 cr. / CSC 1900 - Discrete Mathematics
or
MATH 2500 - Introduction to Mathematical Thought 3 cr.

Choose two of the following:

MATH 1700 - Applied Statistics 3 cr. (if this course is taken, MATH 1900 may not be taken)
MATH 2400 - Calculus II 4 cr.
MATH 2500 - Introduction to Mathematical Thought 3 cr. (if not taken above)
MATH 2600 - Linear Algebra 3 cr.
MATH 3000 - Geometry 3 cr.
MATH 3150 - Elementary Number Theory 3 cr.
Any 3000 or 4000 level 3-credit mathematics course except MATH 4850 , MATH 4860 and MATH 4870

Notes:

—All prerequisites for a course must be met before the course can be taken.

—This minor is restricted to students in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Special Education. This minor will meet the minor requirement of the IDIS major for these students.

Students pursuing the Middle School Education Mathematics-Science (5-8) Initial Teacher Licensure are required to complete a Minor in Mathematics as part of their IDIS major.
