SPED 3800 - Secondary Programs for Adolescents (14-22) with Disabilities 3 cr. 3 hrs. Day course offered every Semester.
This course focuses on the critical importance of broadly defining diversity and understanding how it impacts secondary education. Disability is explored as an aspect of diversity in today’s schools. Teacher candidates are introduced to the field of special education, including the laws that govern services to individuals with disabilities. Specific disabilities are explored, along with strategies for universal design and inclusion. Emphasis is placed on promoting both cognitive and social-emotional growth. A pre-practicum of 10 hours is required. Required for all Middle School Education Majors and for all students seeking a secondary license in a content area.
Prerequisite(s): GPA of 2.5 and passing scores on the Communication and Literacy MTEL (Both Reading and Writing Subtests).
