SPED 8300 - Language Development, Differences and Disorders 3 cr. This course addresses normal development of expressive and receptive language in terms of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. It focuses on the language performance exhibited by different populations of individuals with disabilities. The language of students who are bilingual/bicultural and/or have language difficulties is addressed. Students learn the difference between social and academic language and its importance in planning, differentiating, and delivering effective instruction for English language learners at various levels of proficiency. Students develop an understanding of the principles and practices related to assessment and intervention for children with language disorders. Students assess language needs and plan appropriate strategies.
