Certificate Overview


The Special Issues in Mental Health certificate program is designed to provide individuals with specialized knowledge in the field of counseling that could either broaden the student’s expertise in the field of counseling, or form a foundation for more extensive work at the master’s level. This concentration would be ideal for educators, including school counselors, who desire a stronger knowledge base in the field of mental health counseling.

Program Learning Objectives


  • Exhibit empathy and understanding the process of helping others 
  • Critically analyze our understanding of mental health, in terms of differentiation of diagnoses as well as connection to the broader field of integrated wellness (e.g., physical, educational) 
  • Articulate an application of their coursework to their professional development goals 
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. 

Requirements


The concentration consists of 15 credits, with two required classes, and the choice of 3 elective courses. Students may transfer/apply up to 2 courses from other graduate programs. COUN 7030 cannot be transferred from another institution.

Note


Students must earn a 3.0 in each course for it to count towards the certificate.
